Bringing a Historic Venue Back to Life

The transformation of the Palace of Arts in Exhibition Park was a landmark project, breathing new life into a historic building and turning it into a vibrant arts, entertainment, and brewery venue. Once a military vehicle museum, the site is now home to Wylam Brewery, a space that merges industrial heritage with modern functionality.

Our role was to deliver full electrical and mechanical services, ensuring the venue could operate efficiently and seamlessly as a brewery and entertainment hub. This was followed by a second phase, where an outdoor expansion was developed to accommodate major events like Battle of the Burger, Slice Wars, and Argi Bargi.

Phase 1: Transforming the Palace of Arts into Wylam Brewery

Scope of Work

The first phase of the project involved converting the Palace of Arts into a fully functional brewery and entertainment venue. This required an extensive overhaul of its electrical and mechanical systems to support the brewing process and hospitality functions.

Electrical Works

• Full Design & Installation: We managed the complete electrical infrastructure, ensuring a robust and future-proof system.
• Complete Rewire: This included distribution boards, final circuits, and an upgraded power supply.
• Brewery Control Wiring: Integrated automated control systems to manage brewing operations efficiently.
• Fire Alarm & CCTV Systems: Installed a comprehensive fire detection and security network for safety and monitoring.
• Data Network Wiring: A high-performance network infrastructure to support the brewery’s operations and customer services.

Mechanical Works

• Cellar Cooling System: Critical for beer storage, maintaining optimal conditions for the brewery’s products.
• Walk-in Fridge & Freezer: Essential for food and beverage storage, ensuring a reliable cold chain.
• HVAC & Kitchen Extract Systems: Designed to regulate temperature and ventilation for both staff and customers.
• Mains Cold & Hot Water Systems: Ensured a steady and efficient water supply for brewing and general use.
• Steam Boiler & Brewery Chiller System: Installed to support brewing operations and maintain temperature consistency.

This phase laid the foundation for Wylam Brewery’s successful operations, combining modern electrical and mechanical systems with the historic character of the Palace of Arts.

Phase 2: Expanding the Venue with a New Outdoor Area

Enhancing Capacity for Major Events

To cater to growing visitor numbers and large-scale events, a new outdoor bar, toilet facilities, and garden space were added. This expansion was designed to maximize capacity and provide a seamless experience for festival-goers.

Container-Based Modular Construction

The expansion included modified shipping containers, which were pre-fabricated at our yard before being transported and installed on-site.

Pre-Site Works

• First-Fix Joinery: Structural modifications and interior framing of the containers.
• Spray Foam Insulation: Applied to regulate temperature and improve energy efficiency.
• First-Fix Electrical: Initial electrical installations before transport.

On-Site Works at Wylam Brewery

• Transportation & Placement: The containers were lifted and transported on HGVs to Wylam Brewery.
• Groundworks & Foundations: Essential site preparation, including structural reinforcements.
• Above & Below Ground Drainage: Ensured efficient wastewater management for the new facilities.
• Second-Fix Joinery & Interior Fit-Out: Included bar installations, counter work, and wooden finishes.
• Tiling & Finishes: Applied to the bars and toilet areas for durability and aesthetics.
• Toilet Cubicles & WCs Installation: A crucial addition to accommodate the increased footfall.
• Cellar Cooling System: Installed in the newly-formed cellar to preserve beverage quality.

This modular approach allowed for rapid construction while maintaining quality, ensuring the outdoor space was completed in time for the busy summer event schedule.
